Holy Hyde Park. We hit the lunch buffet at Hyde Park Plaza (actually in Oakley) at 11:30 on a Sunday. The small but tidy dining room is usually busy and today was no exception. It is a varied crowd, lots of foot traffic shoppers and lots of people just here for the food. The server was very friendly and set us immediately.
The buffet was mostly misses, even with usually flavorful dishes like vindaloo tasting more like tomato paste than anything else. The tikka masala was watery and bland. The naan was dense, chewy and sparse, often none to be found. The rice lacked texture and flavor. The saag was stand out, with seared paneer cheese adding a pop of texture to the creamy mix.
The verdict is not great – the buffet had seen better days but the staff is very prompt and friendly. Like, seriously friendly. It seems like in an effort to tailor tastes to a less adventurous palette, they lost a bit of flavor in the process. Serious Indian foodies should stick to diners or ordering off the menu.
